How Relationships Support Our Overall Health

Ever wonder why connections matter so much? Sure, we love having people to spend time with and talk to when something really amazing (or really terrible) happens in our day, but there’s actually more to it than that!

Scientifically speaking, relationships aren’t just for socializing; they’re stress-relievers, immune system boosters, and build a foundation for vibrant emotional health.

Let’s take a look at health-based perks of fostering strong, positive relationships.

First up, stress. Positive relationships and social support can act as a buffer against stress. Having someone to confide in as you face life’s challenges means that you have emotional support and know that you aren’t alone. There’s science behind this, too – interacting with others triggers the release of oxytocin, a hormone that reduces stress.

But how do we do that? How do we develop those strong, positive relationships that lead to the vibrant emotional health of those involved in them? Put simply, it’s about learning how to be an adult in relationships.

It’s about having someone else who says, “I see you and you matter.” In that environment, self-esteem and self-worth can flourish.

When my partners says, “I’m so glad you’re organized – I could never have planned this trip on my own” it encourages me to look at them and see what I appreciate about them. You have to say it out loud, though! “If I were as spontaneous as you, I wouldn’t even need to do all this planning! I love how you’re always down for anything.”

Feeling valued is a necessity in any relationship. It’s the difference between just coexisting and thriving together. When we affirm and acknowledge one another, we create a space where we can both nurture our sense of self-worth.

My mom, on the other hand, is full of advice. She thrives on actionable steps and she is the one who will tell me exactly what I need to do to make the situation right again.

But sometimes that’s not what I need right now, either. That’s where my friends come in. They are the ones who will not only listen to my rant, but they join in. “Who does she think she is, talking to you like that?” and “Give me her number – I’d like to give her a piece of my mind!” show me that I’m not alone. They are the best at empathizing and letting me feel what I’m feeling.

Having a diverse social group is like having a great toolkit – you just reach in and grab the right tool for the job.
